Spurs are objects with blunt or pointed edges that fit on the heel of a person's boot or shoe. When that person is mounted on a horse, he or she can urge the horse forward by poking the horse with the spur. Anthony Wayne (1745-1796) was born in Pennsylvania and gained distinction during the American Revolution. He was nicknamed "Mad" Anthony Wayne due to his sense of daring and impatience with restraint. After the war, Americans Indians dealt the military in the Northwest Territory humiliating defeats. Undisciplined militia troops were blamed, and George Washington appointed Wayne commander-in-chief of the newly created Legion of the United States. Under Wayne's command, troops were ruthlessly drilled and disciplined. After building several forts, Wayne's army defeated the Americans Indians at the pivotal Battle of Fallen Timbers. Description: Dated ca. 1930-1939, this photograph shows the Anthony Wayne Treaty Memorial in Darke County, Ohio, which commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Greeneville, with a note on the reverse which reads "Anthony Wayne Treaty Memorial. W. Main St. near spot where treaty was signed." General Anthony Wayne (January 1, 1745 – December 15, 1796) was a United States Army general and statesman. Wayne adopted a military career at the outset of the American Revolutionary War, where his military exploits and fiery personality quickly earned him a promotion to the rank of brigadier general and the nickname of "Mad" Anthony Wayne. On August 20, 1794, an American army commanded by Anthony Wayne defeated an American Indian Confederacy at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. In January 1795, representatives from the various tribes met with Wayne at Fort Greene Ville. The Americans and natives spent the next eight months negotiating a treaty. It became known as the Treaty of Greeneville. On August 3, 1795, leaders of the Wyandotte, Delaware, Shawnee, Ottawa, Miami, Eel River, Wea, Chippewa, Potawatomi, Kickapoo, Piankashaw, and the Kaskaskia formally signed the treaty. Many American Indian groups refused to honor the agreement. White settlers continued to move onto the contested land. Violence continued between them and Native American leaders like Tecumseh and the Prophet would emerge in the early 1800s to carry on the Indian struggle to regain their lost land. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph depicts an obelisk atop a small hill at the Mound Hill Cemetery. Founded in the 1800s, is the largest in Preble County. Originally called the Eaton Cemetery, it is now also called Mound Hill Union Cemetery and is located at 533 West Main Street, in Eaton. Named for a prehistoric Indian mound which can be found near the front which now holds the remains of 15 soldiers from General Anthony Wayne's army who were killed in an Indian attack on October 17, 1793. The remains were moved from burial sites at Fort St. Clair, then re-interred in the mound on October 1847, and a 10ft. monument of Rutland Marble erected. Description: Caption on reverse reads: "Indian Trail Marker (Silhouette). Central Pky. and Sycamore Str." This photograph shows a plaque with the silhouette of soldiers and a covered wagon on top, held between two concrete pillars. It used to stand somewhere near the intersections of Reading Road, Central Parkway and Sycamore Street, in Cincinnati. Inscription reads: "Approximately at this point two Ohio military trails branched. Reading Road follows the marches of Bowman, Clark, Harmar, Harrison, Clay and Shelby, 1779 - 1812. Central Parkway follows the route of St. Clair and Wayne, 1791 - 1793." A historical marker, erected under the Ohio Revolutionary Memorial Commission's plan, stands at Central Parkway and Sycamore where the two Ohio trails branched. Reading Road following the marches of Bowman, Clark, Harmar, Harrison, Clay and Shelby; and Central Parkway folloing the route of St. Clair and Mad Anthony Wayne - brave names in those days of pioneer drumbeat and marching soldiers and frontiersmen in buckskin. The Daughters of the American Revolution placed at the Central Parkway and Ludlow Avenue intersection a bronze tablet in memory of Major General Arthur St. Clair, who was an officer in the Revolutionary War, first governor of the Northwest Territory, and the man who gave Cincinnati its name. Major General Arthur St. Clair left Fort Washington, in present day Cincinnati, on September 17, 1791, following the aforementioned trail north, in order to build a fort at the head of the Maumee River. An large group of Indians led by Little Turtle and Blue Jacket, as well as army deserters and prisoners, left Kekionga in Indiana, heading south. The Indians had been receiving information about the army's movements from warrior scouts and deserters, and a large group led by Little Turtle and Blue Jacket headed south to intercept St. Clair's army. A battle ensued near what is now Fort Recovery in which most of St. Clair's officers were killed, causing him to lose his post and his reputation.General Anthony Wayne returned in 3 years with properly trained, well-equipped army, and defeated the Indians at Fallen Timbers near Toledo. Description: This photograph shows the steamer ore boat "Steelton of Wilmington" docked alongside railroad tracks in Toledo, Ohio. This was probably owned by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation (1857 - 2003), based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and used for transporting coal or steel. In the background can be seen the Anthony Wayne Suspension Bridge. The bridge, built in 1931by the McClintic - Marshall Company is 1252 long in total. Also called The High Level Bridge, it has various lattice patterns, as well as a large "X" in each of the towers. Unusual is the fact that the the extender cables running down from the main cable are in sets of two, rather than the more common single extender. Spanning the Maumee River and currently painted sky blue, it connects Clayton Street to Woodville Road with Routes 2, 21 and 65 also using the bridge. Among his many actions and accomplishments, on August 20, 1794, Wayne mounted an assault on the Indian confederacy at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, in modern Maumee, Ohio (just south of present-day Toledo), which was a decisive victory for the U.S. forces, ending the war. Wayne then negotiated the Treaty of Greenville between the tribal confederacy and the United States, which was signed on August 3, 1795. Description: Map showing the lands involved with General Anthony Wayne's campaign against American Indians in the Northwest Territory, 1793-1794. The map also includes the military traces of General Josiah Harmar (1790) and General Arthur St. Clair (1791). It was prepared by the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society, drawn by Paul N. Haines in June of 1944, and approved by the Anthony Wayne Memorial Legislative Committee on June 16, 1944. Also included is an inset of the Toledo-Detroit area.
